Title
Gertrude
Stein
seminar
Performer(s)
Waldman
,
Anne
.
Subject 1
Stein
,
Gertrude
,
1874-1946
.
Abstract
The
third
in a
series
of
classes
taught
by
Anne
Waldman
on
Gertrude
Stein
. This
class
deals
with
Melanctha
,
naturalism
, and The
Making
of
America
.
Students
read
Steins
portraits
of
Cezanne
,
Matisse
, and
Picasso
. A
few
students
also
share
their
perspectives
on
Steins
work
by
reading
pieces
of
writing
and
commenting
on and
discussing
the
work
.
Content
cuts
into
Anne
Waldman
reading
about
Gertrude
Stein's
writing
as
logicality
as
basis
for
literary
action
. She then
quotes
Stein
talking
about
sight
,
sound
and
sense
and
eliminating
grammar
and
continues
to
read
the
commentary
regarding
Steins
usage
of
language
. There
is
then
commentary
on the US and its
government
with the
purpose
of
art
being
a
human
expression
of this
understanding
and
relationship
. She then
continues
to
talk
of "
Melanctha
" by
reading
from an
unknown
source
.
8:55
Anne
opens
it
up
to the
class
to
find
out
their
response
of what she
read
.
Based
on
student
response
Anne
rereads
section
about
the
focus
of
writer
on
scene
.
Student
comments
that
points
have to be
exploded
out
of
reality
for
it
to
come
forth
.
10:15
man
makes
comment
(hard
to
hear)
Anne
retorts
back
, but the
man's
initial
comment
is
hard
to
hear
.
Anne
then
comments
on
writing
as
therapy
and
writing
as
art
. What
is
being
said
in this
article
is
that the
writing
is
not
infected
by the
path
. This
is
a
point
of
Stein
to
understand
. Her
theme
is
writing
. To
look
at "
Melanctha
"
it
is
possible
to
review
it
as a
case
study
. The
writer
is
like
a
magpie
.
12:45
woman
then
makes
comment
regarding
the
presentation
of this
article
that was
read
. This
person
turns
out
to be
William
Carlos
Williams
who
is
commenting
on
Gertrude
Stein
.
Stein
was not
accepted
during
her
initial
state
of
writing
.
14:22
Anne
then
talks
about
the
essays
she
provided
the
class
and the
varied
perspectives
provided
. There
is
also
comments
about
the
vulnerability
about
the
statements
Stein
made
when
she was
talking
about
writing
.
Anne
mentions
"
Tristan
Shanty
"
about
writing
for
writings
sake
. Then
Anne
segues
into
naturalist
writing
.
18:18
Anne
talks
more
about
naturalism
and "
Melanctha
"
being
a
representation
of this.
Student
asks
about
Flaubert
and
realism
and the
difference
between
realism
and
naturalism
.
Anne
then
poses
the
question
what
is
Kerouac
? The
definitions
begin
to
blend
.
Anne
then
restates
that
Stein
does
not
fit
neatly
into a
category
. But also
look
at
Proust
,
Virginia
Wolf
, and
Joyce
. There
is
a
difficulty
with this.
All
are
concerned
with
time
and
stream
of
consciousness
in a
sense
.
27:58
Student
comment
about
Emile
Zola
and a
question
about
Stein's
reaction
to
Proust
.
Anne
then
takes
the
class
back
to
reading
from
William
Carlos
William's
comments
on
Stein
and
movements
of
passion
.
30:30
Anne
then
directs
class
to
compare
a
page
of
Proust
,
Wolf
and
Stein
and
see
what they are
doing
with
time
as a
way
to
get
perspective
on
Stein
.
It
is
important
to
remember
that not
all
of this
work
was
available
to the
respective
writer
when
they were
writing
. If
anything
,
Stein
was
more
influenced
by the
painters
.
32:24
student
,
Robert
,
reads
his
piece
on
time
called
"a
sense
of
time.
"
35:01
woman
student
challenges
his
view
on
time
.
[very
hard
to
hear!!]
and
lots
of
students
talking
about
meaning
and
reading
and
time
-
lots
of
scuttle
in the
class
with
students
talking
over
one
another
.
Anne
jumps
in
talking
about
Apollo
hunting
for
stones
.
Anne
then
asks
how this
relates
to
Stein
.
Man
responds
that there
is
semantic
units
within
her
work
.
Man
feels
like
Steins
process
is
less
interesting
than her
writing
. He
feels
like
process
should be
kept
to the
self
and not
shared
.
Anne
feels
that the
process
takes
you
back
to the
writing
and
seems
very
related
.
Woman
relates
back
to
Williams
'
article
and that
Stein
is
making
progression
not
progress
.
42:55
Anne
then
applauds
the
man
for
defining
between
product
and
process
.
Another
man
jumps
in
about
her
perspective
regarding
this also.
More
banter
regarding
process
and
product
from the
class
.
46:05
Anne
asks
another
student
to
read
their
piece
.
46:36
tape
ends
46:44
cuts
into
man
discussing
the
class
about
Gertrude
Stein
with a
woman
piping
in that
it
is
difficult
to
separate
the
writer
from their
work
47:20
new
man
talking
about
his
work
and
investigation
into
repetition
50:00
new
man
reads
from his
piece
regarding
Stein
54:55
Anne
begins
to
read
from
pg
329
of an
unknown
book
and then has a
female
student
continue
reading
.
It
is
commentary
from
Stein
on the "
Making
of
Americans
" with
comments
from
students
and
Anne
regarding
Cubism
and
Cezanne
.
Discussion
leads
to
writing
to
break
the
portrait
instead
of
directly
stating
a
portrait
60:47
man
reading
portrait
of
Matisse
by
Stein
with a
few
other
students
jumping
in to
read
sections
also with a
little
following
commentary
about
the
portraits
that have been
created
in that the
Matisse
portrait
talks
more
about
the
man
than his
work
72:10
Anne
talking
about
the
past
tense
and how
it
highlighted
Stein's
commentary
regarding
Matisse
-
student
mentions
present
tense
and
another
student
then
talks
about
cinema
and
viewing
frame-by-frame
-
Anne
pushes
students
to
get
beyond
personal
preferences
and to the
point
of what she
is
doing
and the
substance
inherent
76:20

has
